DWK’s Updated Public Official Ethics Training Now Available for School Trustees and Superintendents!

Oct 1, 2026 | DWK Update, Education Law, Legal Developments and News

Following a recent amendment, school district and county superintendents and charter school chief administrators must complete a two-hour ethics training course every two years. The ethics training requirement was already applicable to board trustees who were serving on boards as of January 1, 2025, but the law now makes the training requirement mandatory for school district superintendents, county superintendents, and chief administrators of charter schools.

Additionally, newly seated trustees, as well as superintendents, county superintendents, and chief administrators of charter schools are required to complete their initial ethics training within 6 months of starting their position, with follow-up training every two years thereafter. The law does not mandate a specific initial training compliance date for those superintendents and chief charter school administrators whose employment with their agency predates January 1, 2026; nevertheless, such officials must complete an ethics training every two years.

Records of training compliance must be kept, and starting July 1, 2026, information regarding how a member of the public may obtain compliance records must be posted clearly on the agency’s website.

No matter where your district is in the two-year training cycle, DWK offers two convenient, district-focused options to help your team members meet the requirement—now and every two years. Covering key laws like the Brown Act, California Public Records Act, and Education Code requirements such as the Greene Act, this training meets all statutory requirements and keeps your board and officials compliant. With DWK, your district can confidently meet all ethics training obligations.
