U.S. Department of Education and Department of Justice Issue Joint Guidance on Educating English Learners

Mar 23, 2015 | Legal Developments and News

he U.S. Department of Education (DOE) and Department of Justice issued joint guidance, reminding state and local educational agencies of their obligations to students identified as English learners. Along with the joint guidance, the DOE released resources to help better serve English learners, including fact sheets in multiple languages and a toolkit created by the DOE’s Office of English Language Acquisition, designed to help local educational agencies identify and address needs of English learner students. California schools serve approximately 1.4 million English learners, making these resources particularly important here. For more information on the guidance, and to view resources for parents and educational officials, please visit the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights website.
