SUMMARY:How to Use DWK Front Ends: Bid Document Basics
DESCRIPTION:Date/Time: January 14\, 2026 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM \nCost: $50 \nDescription: DWK thanks you for supporting our Front End documents. To better utilize our Front Ends\, we are offering this webinar in time for bidding season. Let’s face it – regardless of how great the documents may be\, they will not be effective if not filled out correctly. We will discuss how construction documents are organized and what documents should be included in your bids. This webinar will discuss what the various options in the documents mean so that required provisions can be included and unnecessary provisions reserved or deleted. Having this knowledge will help eliminate or cut down bid protests to due ambiguity in the bid documents. We plan on covering bidding for districts with and without CUPCCAA. Use of DWK front ends will make it easier to follow along but is not required to attend this webinar. \nPresenters: Deidree Y.M.K Sakai & Reid D. Shannon

SUMMARY:3rd Annual Blueprint for Charter Authorizers Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, May 6\, 2025 \n8:30 am to 11:30 am \nThe 3rd Annual Blueprint for Charter Authorizers Symposium is an in-depth conversation with DWK attorneys\, designed to equip you with the knowledge\, resources\, and tools to address the ever-changing landscape of Charter Schools in your district. \nFeaturing presentations on a variety of topics\, the Blueprint for Charter Authorizers is designed to provide vital information to board members and district staff regardless of whether they are new to the district or veterans. \nYour $150 registration fee includes attendance for up to 4 district officials or employees. \nUnintended Consequences: AB 1505\, Mayacamas Charter\, and the Rise of Countywide Charters \nPresented by Sue Ann Salmon Evans and Keith A. Yeomans \nIn 2019\, the Legislature comprehensively amended the Charter Schools Act through the enactment of Assembly Bill No. 1505. One of the key objectives was to ensure local school districts had a greater voice when considering charter school petitions\, including the consideration of community and fiscal impacts on local schools when approving or denying charter school petitions. Recent litigation with the Mayacamas Charter School in Napa Valley Unified School District has revealed a loophole in AB 1505’s objectives as charter schools increasingly turn to countywide charter school petitions to circumvent both local school district input and the consideration of community and fiscal impacts on local schools. This presentation will examine the Legislative efforts to give local school districts greater control and flexibility when considering charter school petitions\, recent litigation testing these new amendments\, and charter school petitioners’ pivot towards countywide charter schools as a potential means of circumventing the Legislature’s amendments. \nCharter Oversight – Recognizing and Addressing Equity of Access Issues\nPresented by William F. Schuetz\, Jr. \nWhile charter schools should be a public education choice open to all students\, barriers may be in place that inhibit or even deny equity of access. Through this discussion of charter school obligations regarding admissions\, non-discrimination\, achieving a balance reflective of its authorizer\, and meeting the needs of all student populations attending the charter school\, attendees will learn to recognize potential problem areas\, and take away recommended practices that can be utilized as part of oversight and renewals to help ensure equal access is afforded and what can be done if it is not.

SUMMARY:CASH 46th Annual Conference on School Facilities
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, February 24th | 2:45 PM – 3:30 PM \nTips and Tricks to Improve Your Facility Use Agreement\nSchool districts permit outside entities to use their facilities for a myriad of purposes. Such public use of facilities is subject to the requirements of the Civic Center Act and Governing Board policies\, and the terms of use should be set forth in a facility use agreement. However\, if poorly prepared\, the facility use agreement may not adequately protect the district from liability. This mini workshop will provide practical advice for Civic Center Act policies\, procedures and practices\, and terms to include in facility use agreements. \nModerator: Christine Vana\, DWK\nPanelist: Owen Chang\, Director of Facilities Planning & Construction\, Colton Joint Unified School District \nMonday\, February 24th | 2:45 PM – 3:30 PM \nPublic Records Act Compliance for School Construction\nDistricts frequently receive requests under the California Public Records Act (“CPRA”) for records related to school construction projects. Requests can come from many sources – labor organizations\, unsuccessful bidders\, or community members opposed to a project. This workshop will cover CPRA basics\, and then apply them to specific requests that districts face regarding their school construction projects. Attendees will learn tips and tricks for managing CPRA requests efficiently\, and avoiding burdensome responses that can potentially eat up the time of staff who would otherwise be working on district projects. \nModerator: Luke Punnakanta\, DWK\nPanelist: Patrick Cisneros\, Director of Facilities Services\, Desert Sands Unified School District \nTuesday\, February 25th | 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM \nTop 5 Things That a District Is Looking for in a Proposed Change Order\nDespite our best laid plans\, change orders usually come up during a project. For the stability of the project\, the district and the contractor can hopefully agree on the change in contract price and/or contract time and keep the progress going. Our panel of district representatives will discuss entitlement to change orders\, as well as what the district is looking for as backup to a change order request. \nModerator: Deidree Sakai\, DWK\nPanelists: Brandt Burns\, Director of Facilities & Operations\, Sunnyvale School District\nPatrick Cisneros\, Director of Facilities Services\, Desert Sands Unified School District\nEric Holm\, Director of Facilities and Construction\, Palo Alto Unified School District \nClick HERE for more information
