Strategies For Handling Public Communications – The Legal and Public Relations Perspectives

With school districts and other local education agencies at the center of public focus in over the last two years, the amount of communications sent to governing board members and district staff from members of the public has grown exponentially. These communications can range from comments or criticism of programs to allegations against district employees to Brown Act complaints. When and how to respond to these communications can be critical from both a communications and legal standpoint.

This BETA Brown Bag will focus on strategies for responding to these communications. DWK is excited to welcome Jessica Hull, Director of Communications and Community Relations for the Carmel Unified School District and President-elect of CalSPRA to join us for this webinar. With her knowledge and DWK’s legal background, the discussion will aim to offer approaches on how/when to respond to communications from both the legal and public relations perspective.

As with all BETA Brown Bags, the last 10 minutes of the session will be an opportunity for attendees to ask and discuss any other governance-related questions they are currently addressing.

DWK’s Board, Ethics, Accountability, and Transparency (BETA) practice group is proud to present this webinar as part of its BETA Brown Bags series. Brown Bags are a series of bi-monthly webinars each focused on the practical aspects of a specific board, governance, or transparency topic. The webinars will provide an opportunity for a discussion with experienced DWK attorneys on current topics facing local education agencies, their boards, and staff. While each session will have a specific focus, they will also include time for questions on any governance related matters that attendees would like to discuss.
