2020 Census Data & Board Elections

The upcoming release of the 2020 census data will prompt many districts to examine their governing board elections. Whether a district still uses at-large elections and may need to transition to by-trustee area elections or if a district has made the transition but will need to review and possibly adjust trustee area boundaries, the release of the census data in the next few months will be an important event.

During this BETA Brown Bag, DWK attorneys will review the application of the California Voting Rights Act to districts and the requirement to redistrict following release of the census data. This Brown Bag will present a discussion on the different options and approaches as well as highlight some of the still unanswered questions likely to face boards later this year. As with all BETA Brown Bags, the last 15 minutes of the session will be an opportunity for attendees to ask and discuss any other governance-related questions they are currently addressing.

DWK’s Board, Ethics, Accountability, and Transparency (BETA) practice group is proud to present this webinar as part of its BETA Brown Bags series. Brown Bags are a series of bi-monthly webinars each focused on the practical aspects of a specific board, governance, or transparency topic. The webinars will provide an opportunity for a discussion with experienced DWK attorneys on current topics facing local education agencies, their boards, and staff. While each session will have a specific focus, they will also include time for questions on any governance related matters that attendees would like to discuss.
